Healing looks good on you

Tattoo Aftercare Basics

Whether you leave your session wrapped in Saniderm or a traditional bandage, caring for your new tattoo properly is essential for the best results.

Your artist will explain their preferred method before you leave—always follow their specific instructions, as healing can vary based on the style, placement, and your own skin.

If You're Using Second Skin Wraps

  •  Keep the bandage on for as long as your artist recommends. Standard is up to 24 hours.

  • You may notice fluid and ink collecting under the wrap—this is totally normal. As long as the tattoo is sealed, it's safe.

  • Don’t pick, peel, or poke at the bandage.

  • You can shower with it on, but avoid soaking in tubs or pools.

  • When it’s time to remove, do so under warm water and peel gently.

  •  Gently peel the bandage by pulling it slowly from the edge back over itself. Avoid pulling upwards.

  • Wash with unscented, antibacterial soap, (preferably Dial) pat dry, and apply non-scented lotion.

  • If your artist recommends a second bandage after 24 hours, apply using their instructions and remove after 3-6 days.

  • After removal, follow washing instructions 3-4 times a day and apply small amounts of non-scented lotions.

If You're Using Traditional Bandages/Wraps

  •  Keep the bandage on as long as instructed—usually a few hours.

  • Wash your hands before removing the wrap and touching your tattoo.

  • Gently wash the area with lukewarm water and unscented, antibacterial soap. (preferably Dial)

  • Pat dry with a clean paper towel or allow to air dry.

  • Apply a thin layer of artist-recommended ointment or lotion if advised.

  • Keep your tattoo clean, moisturized, and free from friction.

  • After removal, follow washing instructions 3-4 times a day and apply small amounts of non-scented lotions.

What To Avoid While Healing (both methods)

  •  No direct sunlight or tanning.

  • No soaking in water (pools, baths, hot tubs).

  • No scented lotions, scrubs, or harsh cleansers.

  • No scratching or picking—yes, even if it itches.

Questions or Concerns?

Healing isn’t one-size-fits-all. If anything feels off or you’re unsure about something, reach out to your artist directly—they’ll guide you based on your specific piece and how your body is responding.

Signs of Infection

While it’s normal to experience some redness, tenderness, and mild swelling, reach out to your artist or a medical professional if you notice:

  • Excessive or worsening redness and heat around the tattoo.

  • Thick yellow or green discharge.

  • Pain that increases over time.

  • A foul odor.

  • Fever or chills.

Touch-Ups

Tattoos can heal differently depending on your skin type, placement, and how well you care for them. Minor fading or patchiness is normal for some tattoos—if you think your piece needs a touch-up, contact your artist directly. Most of our artists offer free or discounted touch-ups within a certain time frame.

Piercing Aftercare Basics

Keep It Clean. Let It Shine.

Whether it’s your first piercing or your tenth, proper aftercare is essential for keeping your new jewelry looking great and healing well.

Each piercer has slightly different preferences depending on the location and style of your piercing, so always follow the instructions your piercer gives you before you leave the studio.

Healing Basic Rules

  • Wash your hands thoroughly before touching your piercing.

  • Clean the area with a sterile saline solution or the aftercare product recommended by your piercer.

  • Use a clean gauze or paper towel to gently dab the area—avoid cotton balls or anything that may leave fibers behind.

  • Do not twist, turn, or remove your jewelry during the healing process unless specifically instructed.

Do's and Dont's

✅ Do:

  • Keep your bedding and towels clean.

  • Wear loose, clean clothing around body piercings.

  • Be gentle when washing your face, brushing your teeth, or changing clothes.

❌ Don’t:

  • Don’t touch your piercing unless you’re cleaning it.

  • Don’t use alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, or harsh cleansers.

  • Don’t swim in pools, hot tubs, lakes, or oceans while healing.

  • Don’t sleep directly on new ear or facial piercings.

Good Things Come To Those Who Wait

Healing times vary by piercing location and your personal body chemistry. Your piercer will tell you what to expect and how to know when it’s fully healed. Some piercings may take just a few weeks; others can take several months.

Questions or Concerns?

Healing isn’t always linear. If anything feels off—or you just want peace of mind—reach out to your piercer directly. They’re here to guide you every step of the way.

Signs of Infection

Some redness, tenderness, and swelling is normal at first. But contact your piercer or a healthcare provider if you notice:

  • Severe or increasing pain, redness, or warmth.

  • Thick yellow or green discharge.

  • Unusual odor.

  • Fever or chills.
